Here’s just a few (of many) reasons why you will want to avoid conventional spices from here on out.

If you didn’t already know, conventional spices are full of pesticides, GMO’s, artificial flavors, fillers, MSG, chemical sterilizing agents, anti-caking agents and on top of all that, some are even irradiated. That’s right, it is possible that your spices even passed through a powerful radiation beam before being packaged and shipped out to you.

The Organic Consumers Association pushed out an article back in 2001 warning, “Virtually all conventional spices sold in the United States are fumigated[sterilized] with hazardous chemicals that are banned in Europe.” It is alarming these practices are still occurring and acceptable in the U.S nearly fifteen years later, despite evidence proving it is detrimental to the human body.

One of the most hazardous sterilizing agents Ethylene Oxide, is listed on the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health as being, “Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health Concentrations” with a value of 800 ppm.

The Organic Consumers Association went onto explain how “irradiation exposes spices to up to a million rads of ionizing radiation — the equivalent of one billion chest X-rays (the highest amounts allowed for any food).” I don’t know about you, but that seriously freaks me out.

The average American needs to be informed about the consequences that come along with buying conventional spices at their common grocery store.

Instead of putting your body through all of this trouble, safest bet is to buy organic and mix your own spices. It is actually super simple to mix your own seasoning together from scratch and your body will surely feel rewarded.
